Just got back from Singapore and decided to write right away, since the memories are very fresh. First of all just to describe the city in few words: the cleanest, modern, most expensive city I have visited. One drink at a bar is at least $20CDN but I will talk about it later.
We lived in Little India in hostel called the Mitraa which was super nice, very clean, and had the most friendly staff. While walking on the streets of Little India I felt like I am actually visiting India; the temples, the street markets, the smells, and the people. Just to go back to the hostel experience; we had 4 guys staying with us in the hostel. Three of them travelling the world and told us some crazy stories; travelling around the world tubing in Laos, biking through Vietnam which just makes me want to travel and explore even more. One of the best stories from the hostel was told by our Indian roommate. The last night we were in the hostel I was chilling in the room and was talking to him about arranged marriage, and I was curious to hear what he has to say about it. He looked like a very modern guy who wouldn’t get married through arranged married. After about 10 minutes of conversation he said that his marriage was arranged and that he got to see his wife only three times before getting married. He told me he is lucky he got to see her three times because usually you get to see you future wife only once. He explained that its his parents who picked her and it was based on the her family background, her education, and their income. I was completely fascinated by the story and couldn’t believe my ears. I asked him if he was happy, and he said that he is very happy so I guess maybe arranged marriage isn’t the worst idea. In the end he offered me some Indian sweets that were delicious. I loved the hostel experience and just meeting bunch of random people with the craziest life stories.
Ok its I think its enough with the hostel stories now to Singapore. Very clean city cannot find any litter even if you look for it. One day were walking on a pedestrian bridge and saw cleaners cleaning the bridge with soap and then vacuuming it, yes it how they rule. You cannot buy gum in Singapore just in any convenient store; you have to go to the pharmacy and go see a pharmacist give them you address and other information and then they will sell you gum. The fine for littering is enormous. Everything there is very orderly and many rules apply to citizens actions.
The food is great and you can find different kinds of food since it’s a very multicultural city with four official languages. If you go to a hawker centre you can eat for 5 dollars a very good meal. Fresh juices and fruit are everywhere and its very delicious.
Now the partying scene is great but very very expensive. To get to a club you have to pay entrance – 15-30$ depends on where you choose to go. Drinks are at least 12$ and then if you go to a nicer place they go up to 25$ easily. We went to a bar on the 71st floor and had great drinks and the view was amazing, would recommend it – New Asia lounge. The other night we went to Atika great place as well with amazing house/trance music. We saw 2 girls with 2 littre bottle of Belvedere - very odd, I don’t even think Russian or Canadian or Finish girls can drink so much, plus with the price of alcohol there it must be very expensive.
One of the most beautiful orchid gardens I visited was in Singpore, haven’t seen so many orchids in my life. It a huge Botanical garden in the middle of Singapore which occupies a very big territory and you can find many different gardens inside. We only got to see the Orchid garden because of the lack of time, but you can spends hours there, have a picnic, or even a wedding.
To be continued...
