Finally I have the time to write a bit more, so here we go. This week was the first week of school and I really enjoyed it, the classes are thought in a similar format and the Professors are very educated andI understand them better than some professor at Ottawa U. All the classrooms are renovated and have modern equipment which I did not expect. Few cultural shocks; CUHK students love talking in class and when the professor says it’s not acceptable they are very surprised that they are told to be quiet.
Today the Professor was taking about Judaism and asked if there are any Jews in the class (he didn’t expect me saying yes) when I raised my arm the whole class looked at me as if they have never seen a Jewish person in their life. It’s very funny to tell people where I am from; I am Russian from Canada but used to live in Israel but now I am in Hong Kong.
Other cultural shocks (minor); girls not shaving their underarms i.e. my roommate, locals wearing panty hoes and long sweaters and jeans when its 35 degrees Celsius(we are dying from heat), and the lack of tissues to wipe your hands in restaurants and school cafeteria.
Today I had the best mango juice ever; freshly squeezed only for $1.5 life is good.
Yesterday we visited the Happy Valley Horse Race and it was a great experience and only $1.5 to get in, and then you can bet as much as you want on the horses.
Hong Kong does not cease to amaze me – city that never sleeps.
